An original method
Comparing academic theory and practice
Studies on an international scale
A multi-sectoral approach
Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Construction, Aviation, etc.
How does it work?
Each strategic analysis is carried out over a period of 18 to 24 months by a Scientific Strategic Analysis Group, coordinated by one or two members of the Foncsi’s scientific team.
The work of the Group is strengthened by academics, who are widely recognized in the field of safety and risk.
And each Foncsi sponsor and partner nominates an expert from their organization, who participates in the Group throughout the strategic analysis.
In this way, we ensure that both research outcomes and practice are considered.
Stages in the strategic analysis
- Review the state-of-the-art to gain an overview of the literature (the big picture). Plan the analysis. Reformulate the problem, and identify relevant, internationally-recognized experts.
- A two-day international academic seminar with invited international experts.
- Comparison with industrial practices: to what extent have the various academic concepts been ‘assimilated’ and ‘translated’ by the industry? Are they acknowledged as relevant and effective, at what cost, and how long are the results expected to last?
- A half-day seminar for partners and sponsors, to learn lessons about concepts and practices.
The results are published in :
- “SpringerBriefs in safety management”, an open access academic book published by Springer,
- Foncsi's “Cahiers de la sécurité industrielle” collection.
Current analyses
Analyses included in the 'Foncsi 4' program
At the end of 2023, the Foncsi launched a new scientific program: 'Foncsi 4' (2023 to 2027).
Three strategic analyses are currently underway:
Three other strategic analyses will be launched following the first ones:
- Managing simplification
- Safety governance extended to sustainability and social responsibility
- Improving the integration of industrial risks in ESG reporting
Clusters
In parallel with a strategic analysis, business ‘clusters’ can be created to focus on a sector of activity.
These clusters bring together organizations from the same industrial sector who work on and discuss the same theme as the strategic analysis, while benefiting from the latter’s results
- The cluster 'Energy services' and the cluster 'building and civil engineering (BTP)' were created in parallel with the analysis 'Safety skills and careers by 2040'
- The cluster 'Rail' was created in parallel with the analysis 'New safety champions'
Results
In addition to the seminar for partners and sponsors that is organized at the end of the analysis, the outcomes are disseminated as widely as possible, thanks to two open-access publications.
« SpringerBriefs in safety Management »
The Foncsi publishes the results of its strategic analyses and NeTWork with Springer in an open-access collection called SpringerBriefs in Safety Management.
Industrial safety « Cahiers »
This Foncsi collection showcases the results of all of the Foundation’s research. This collection is free to download.
Depending on the theme, science days open to the general public may be held.
