As part of the strategic analysis on “Skills, careers and safety by 2040,” Foncsi invited eight international scholars to engage in discussions with industrial and institutional members participating in the analysis. This closed-door seminar was held at the Royaumont Abbey (Val d’Oise, France) from November 13 to 15..
Each expert had recorded a video about their research work in advance, which all participants were required to watch before attending the seminar.
At Royaumont during the seminar, the experts gave a brief recap of their work, followed by open discussions among all participants.
These open debates enriched the strategic analysis and laid the groundwork for drafting a collective academic book to be published in Foncsi's “SpringerBriefs in Safety Management” collection.
The international academic experts
During this seminar, eight experts presented their work:
- Laurane De Carvalho, University of Geneva (Switzerland): Overcoming the paradox of training design for future and ill-defined practices: the case of nuclear decommissioning teleoperators
- Frédéric Garcias, University of Lille (France): Climbing over the ‘learning wall’. Lessons from the nuclear reactors industry
- Mark Griffin, Curtin University (Australia): Safety implications of uncertain and interdependent systems
- Elleke Ketelaars, University of Geneva (Switzerland): Tackling the “eternal beginners” problem in safety management: the case of occasional crisis responders
- Annet De Lange, University of Heerlen (Netherlands): An Examination of Emerging Challenges and Skills-Based Solutions
- Beth Lay, Forge Works Rochester (USA): Compensation Strategies. A Case Study in Brief from Line Clearance
- Marta Santos, University of Porto (Portugal): Work collectives, forms of transmission and learning, and transformation of work
- Manuel Souto-Otero, University of Bristol (UK): How to address skill gaps. A review of institutional strategies
Throughout the seminar, they engaged, discussed, and debated with all members of the strategic analysis group and Foncsi:
- Stéphanie Tillement (IMT Atlantique)
- Benjamin Razaiarisoa (Icsi)
- Florence Reuzeau (Airbus)
- Raluca Ciobanu (EDF)

Restitution of the results and publications
In the coming months, the members of the strategic analysis group will continue their discussions and refine their reflections to transfer the results to the industry, notably through a dedicated seminar and via an Industrial Safety “Cahier” (Report).
The international experts, for their part, will write the scientific chapters that will form the book published in English by Springer in Foncsi’s “SpringerBriefs in Safety Management” series.
A few more months before the results of this seminar and the entire strategic analysis are revealed!
