Excessive behaviors from authority figures are widely condemned nowadays. However, two Canadian academics, John Fiset and Alyson Byrne, identify in this article the positive effects of authority abuse in the field of safety.
Their thesis is that, with regard to safety and under certain circumstances, a severe reprimand from a direct supervisor can be well accepted by employees and even seen as a sign of genuine commitment to the safety of the staff. But be careful! This surprising effect only occurs if the supervisor is male.
